Baby Bear Hat Pattern

As requested: the pattern for yesterday’s baby hat! A brief warning: this is the second pattern I’ve written, and the first to be seen by anyone other than me. There are probably missing bits or errors (especially since I’ve only made the hat once!) so please let me know what you notice (or what you improve!) so I can make the corrections. Thank you!

Baby Bear Hat

I used Vanna’s Choice yarn in Silver Blue, and a size H hook.

My finished hat is about 12.5 inches around, which is newborn-sized. To make it larger: after Round 6, *2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 5 sts; rep from * around (42 sts.), then Rounds 8 and on (until it’s a good length for your baby’s head) would each have a dc in each st around for 42 sts per round. The most helpful resource for baby head sizing I found is from Bev’s Country Cottage, which has measurements from 1-2 pound preemies through adults.

Abbreviations:
Ch = chain
Sc = single crochet
Dc = double crochet
Sc2tog = single crochet two together

HAT:
Ch 2.
Round 1: Work 6 sc in first ch; place a marker to indicate beg of rnd; move marker up as each rnd is completed.
Round 2: 2 sc in each st around (12 sts.)
Round 3: *2 sc in next st, sc in next st; rep from * around (18 sts.)
Round 4: *2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 2 sts; rep from * around (24 sts.)
Round 5: *2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 3 sts; rep from * around (30 sts.)
Round 6: *2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 4 sts; rep from * around (36 sts.)
Round 7-12: dc in each st around (36 sts.)

Note: Mine ended up with a weird uneven bit at the end of my last row of dc, so I just added a few sc continuing around. You can barely tell anymore.

EAR (make 2):
Round 4: sc in each st around (18 sts.)
Round 5: *sc2tog in next st, sc in next st; repeat from * around (12 sts.)

Weave in all your ends. Sew ears on to hat using a needle with an eye large enough for your yarn. Show off your new hat on the head of a cute baby (or unsuspecting small pet, or upside-down wine glass, or grapefruit…).

    Bon! I found a solution to the weird uneven bit ending of the bear hat! Between rows 6 and 7, ch 2 and then dc in the next st. When you come back around the the ch 2, make a sl st. in the 2nd ch st. Then ch 2 again and repeat! This made all of the dc rows align perfectly!
